The Basilisk is a species of gigantic snakes from the Harry Potter franchise, with a particular female specimen serving as the central antagonist of the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Said Basilisk resided in the Chamber of Secrets that Hogwarts co-founder Salazar Slytherin constructed, and only obeyed the commands of his Heir, who would use her to eradicate Muggle-borns from Hogwarts.

Appearance

The Basilisk is a giant serpent measuring up to 50 to 60 feet long with greenish-gray scaly skin, venomous fangs as thin as sabers, and two huge yellow eyes. It is said that males have scarlet plumes on their heads.

Powers and Abilities

The Basilisk possesses the following powers and abilities:

  • Strength and durability
  • Very good hearing and smell
  • Moderate intelligence
  • Potent venom
  • Lethal gaze (making eye contact results in instant death; if looked at indirectly, victims are petrified)

Fate

The Basilisk is killed by Harry Potter, who fatally stabs her through the roof of her mouth with the sword of Gryffindor.

Trivia

  • In the franchise's 8th and final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the Basilisk is shown to have decomposed into a skeleton when Ron and Hermione venture down to the Chamber of Secrets to collect her fangs as a back-up means of destroying Voldemort's Horcruxes.
  • Right before the Basilisk dies after being stabbed, she gives off sounds similar to those of the Tyrannosaurus Rex from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films.
