The main thing to remember is that alligators and crocodiles are different species. They can be identified by their jaw shape, size and color. They are amphibious reptiles but not true amphibians, they must surface to breathe. Because of their ferocious attacks methods and eating habits they are significant monsters in movies.

Deinosuchus is an extinct genus of alligatoroid crocodilian related to the modern alligator that lived 82 to 73 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period. The name translates as "terrible crocodile" and is derived from the Greek deinos, "terrible", and soukhos, "crocodile". Many crocodilian movie monsters use huge, over-sized animals for effect. Just the thought of a Deinosuchus sized animal is terrorizing.
