Erik Destler is the monster in the 1989 film, The Phantom of the Opera.
The Phantom is the unknown composer Erik Destler who makes a pact with the devil in order to make the world love his music. In return, the devil destroys his face and tells him that he would never be loved by anyone and would be disfigured forever.
Appearance
Erik Destler's facial disfigurement is the result of a deal he made with the Devil. The entire right side of his face appears burned by fire or acid. Dark red patches reveal where the skin has been changed resulting in a horrible disfigurement so ghastly he is forced into hiding wearing a homemade patchwork and skin colored mask. The homemade mask is unsettling because it reveals stitched seams giving even the mask hiding is disfigurement a monstrous appearance.

Fate
Erik Destler is betrayed by Christine who pretends to accept him and his disfigurement. She then rips off his mask, Stabs him and steals his music. She shreds his music and discards it into a sewer, breaking Erik's immortality and defeating him or, so she thinks.
Trivia
- A sequel, titled "The Phantom of the Opera 2: Terror in Manhattan", was planned, but never made.
- Was supposed to be rated X by the MPAA due to several scenes of graphic violence, but eventually received an R after the filmmakers edited this down heavily.
- The disclaimer at the end of the credits reads: "This Motion Picture is not associated with any current or prior stage play or motion picture of the same title."
- Robert Englund has said that the film was their homage to the old Hammer Horror films
- Came out the same year Robert England was also in a nightmare on elm street 5 the dream master.
