The Plasma Bugs are specialized antagonists in the 1997 film, Starship Troopers.
These very large alien arachnids are slow moving defensive/offensive artillery platfoms used for ground bombardment, anti-aircraft defense, orbital bombardment and asteroid deflection/targeting initiatives.
Plasma Bugs were responsible for the asteroid impact which destroys Buenos Aires in the film. Escorted and protected during deployment by ground force bugs these durable monstrosities rain havoc via huge plasma projectile discharges. Blue in color, these large fast moving discharges can rip thru a starship's armor and destroy fleets in orbit. Many of the space battle scenes show these plasma attacks across the flee6t indicating many such batteries of Plasma Bugs exist on planet.
Appearance
The Plasma Bug(s) are slow moving giant true arachnids weighing around 70 metric tons. They have black structure with dark blue highlights and an reaction chamber abdomen with winglet structures which can give it support and stability for aiming. During plasma buildup, the exposed inner abdomen glows blue brightly unitl it spits out the discharge thru its anus-like orfice at the rear. The plasma discharge then soars off to its destination as a long bright blue fireball.
The Plasma Bug has a segmented thorax with a plated head. Two large green eyes. Eight sturdy two-toed feet at each leg making it a true arachnid. The abdomen has reinfocement bands for added strength and contraction for firing its payload.

The Plasma Bug possess the following powers and abilities:

- High mass long distance plasma discharge
- Aiming intelligence (possibly due to hive intelligence)
- Accuracy over long distances
- Working in unison with other bugs (including other plasma bugs in a type of barrage battery)
Fate
The Plasma Bugs whuch are killed on screen die as a result of bombardment of explosives up to and including low yield tactical nukes. Like all bugs from this film the shear numbers planetwide make total destruction unlikely. Some survive.
