The Shadow Cloud Gremlin is the antagonist in the 2020 film Shadow In The Cloud.

While travelling with top-secret documents on a B-17 Flying Fortress, a female WWII pilot (Maude Garrett) encounters the Shadow Cloud Gremlin on board. While stuck in the gun turret, she sees some sort of winged creature clinging to the underside of the bomber's wing. She reports it, but most of the crew ignore or dismisses her.

Appearance

The Shadow Cloud Gremlin resembles a cross between a man-sized bat and a rat-monkey. Its body is tan and leathery over a bony frame with very little musculature or fat. It has hidden wings which unfurl during freefall to allow it to glide on air currents and thermals. Its long fingers allow it to grasp tightly and hold or move around on the outside of airborn aircraft. Its locomotion on ground is bipedal with occasional arm support. It exhibits some intelligence and reasoning.

Powers and Abilities

The Shadow Cloud Gremlin possesses the following powers and abilities:

  • Great Strength - Ability to rip, tear, rend and grasp aircraft components while in flight from exterior positions.
  • Intelligence and Reasoning - Ability to determine and direct its actions towards its own goals.
  • Physical Offence/Defence - Ability to attack and defend using claws, teeth and physical strength.
  • Possesses High Reaction Speed - Ability to dodge, lunge and flee very quickly to avoid counter attacks.
  • Flight - Ability to unfurl hidden wings during freefall to glide using winds, thermals and vortexes.
  • Bipedal Ground Locomotion - Ability to walk on the ground while carrying items.

Fate

Pilot Officer Maude Garrett beats the Shadow Cloud Gremlin to death during the ending ground battle.

Trivia

  • One passenger seeing a creature on the wing of a plane, and no one believing them, is the main plot point of The Twilight Zone: Nightmare at 20,000 Feet (1963), which starred William Shatner -- and its updated version in the Twilight Zone movie, where John Lithgow played the part. ~ IMdb Trivia for Shadow In The Cloud (2020)
  • The gremlins have a monkey like body structure but are repeatedly referred to as resembling rodents. Given the national origin of the film and the company involved in the CGI (Weta Digital), it might be more than a coincidence that the gremlins share quite a bit of their looks with the Rat Monkey featured in New Zealander and Weta Workshop co-owner Peter Jackson's Dead Alive (1992).
