The Mole People are antagonists in the 1956 film, The Mole People.

A party of archaeologists discovers the remnants of a mutant five-millennia-old Sumerian civilization living beneath a glacier atop a mountain in Mesopotamia. Their slave force of Mole People originate from the Hollow Earth and are used as an attacking force until they rebel.

Appearance

The Mole People are bipedal subterranean hump-backed humanoids with large heads and hands. They wear old, tattered human clothing. Their skin is covered in scaly bumps. They possess very large eyes, small noses and slits for mouths. Their hands are over-sized with extremely small stubby fingers close to the palms but protruding long durable pointed claws which resemble human fingers. Their appearance lends to the fact they dig tunnels in dirt.

Powers and Abilities

The Mole People possess the following powers and abilities:

  • Tunneling
  • Sumerian Albino's worker slaves
  • Sumerian Albino's attack force
  • Cultivation/Harvesting Mushrooms

Fate

The Mole People may or may not have survived the events of this film. An earthquake destroys the Sumerian Albino stronghold but the Mole Men could have survied as the are adept at tunneling.

  • Footage of the mole people was later used in The Wild World Of Batwoman as monsters created by a supervillain.
  • The humps for the mole people were done by stuffing the backs of the actors who played them with newspapers.
  • Opening Credits rise up from a hole in the ground.
  • Followed by Of Mushrooms and Madmen: Making 'the Mole People' (2013)
  • Ishtar is a Babylonian goddess, not a Sumerian one.
  • The civilization discovered by the archaeologists is supposed to be Sumerian, yet the writing on the walls of the king's and high priest's chambers are in Egyptian hieroglyphics.
