The Trench are a race of canniballistic ocean-dwelling monsters featured in the 2018 DCEU film Aquaman.
They rose from their domain beneath the ocean floor in search of food. They demonstrate a complete lack of empathy, relying only their primal instinct to feed, even eating their own. The Trench are one of the known tribes of Atlantis. Both the tribe and the individuals are known as The Trench. Swarming Trench are known as Legion.
The Trench reside in the Mariana Trench. The Kingdom of the Trench is one of the seven kingdoms that formed when ancient Atlantis sank. The Trench is also a place where banished Atlanteans are sent to die, assuming that none can survive the terrifying monster inhabitants.
Appearance
The Trench are tall humanoid figures with black bodies and blood red doral, arm amd leg fins. Their tiny black eyes are super sensitive to light and their skin is sensitive to heat but are evolved to thrive in the deepest oceans at extreme prerssures. This makes The Trench incredibly durable, strong and fast. Their wide-opening mouth is lined with razor sharp teeth. Their heads are pointed slightly with verticle spikes protruding. Their hands have three digits tipped with long sharp claws but still suitable for grasping. Their feet have 4 clawed but webbed toes and a dew claw on the heel. Their abdomens are barrel-chested with bony ribs visible. Able to exist in air for short times they crouch or perch while waiting for prey.

The Trench possesses the following powers and abilities:
- Highly durable, dense bodies
- Extreme strength to size ratio
- Long fang-like teeth with a powerful bite
- Sharp, durable articulated hand claws
- Breathes water and air
- Opportunistic canniblistic feeders
- Extremely fast swimmers
- Evolved to live in the deepest ocean, Can kill by dragging prey past its crush depth
- Excellent dark water navigation
- Slash, bite, claw, rip, tear and rend
- Swarming attack of vast numbers, relentless
- Ambush tactics
- Fear-inducing appearance, terrifies its prey
Fate
Mera and Arthur Currie (Aquaman) dispatch a number of The Trench with weapons while still on the boat. During the final OceanMaster battle multiple Trench are killed in numerous ways. Since The Trench are an Atlantean Kingdom sub-race, most trench survive the events of the film.

- James Wan cited the sea monster movie Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) as an influence on the portrayal of the Trench monsters for this movie.
- Peter Safran and James Wan made a concept video of Aquaman and Mera fighting the Trench and showed it to Warner Brothers. The studio was impressed with the video and Safran feels it got this movie made.
- Though Atlantis is mentioned as having seven kingdoms (mentioned during the meeting between Orm and Nereus): Atlantis (the main kingdom), Xebel, the Lost Nation, the Deserters, the Fishermen, the Trench and the Brine. Only six of these kingdoms are seen in the film.
